Happy Father's Day David!

In church yesterday I was asked to share a few words about my husband for Father's Day. Below are a few of my thoughts...
My husband David and I lived in the Caribbean for his first two years of medical school. On the island, we attended a tiny branch which we fell in love with. One day my husband was asked to give a talk. In this particular talk he truly opened up his heart and expressed a beautiful and powerful testimony. I know there was not a dry eye in the room. A brand new convert to the church was deeply touched by his words and she came up to me as soon as the meeting was over. This sister was a single mother with three beautiful children. Her oldest boy was in my husbands Young Men’s class and her two other children became close to me through the primary. Her name was Vah. I did not know her well at all, but she cornered me that day and spoke directly into my eyes. She said, “You do not know how lucky you are.” I casually agreed that yes, I did have a wonderful husband. She could tell what she was saying was not sinking in. “No, you really don’t know how lucky you are. You do not understand what you have.” I looked more directly into her eye and tried to listen harder. She again, for the third time said in a tone I won’t forget. “You are so, so blessed. You do not understand how rare it is to find a husband and father like your husband.”

I was humbled. Her words come into my head again and again as the years pass. I can see that look in her eye and the longing and heartache she felt. Vah lived in absolute poverty. She loved her children. She was a wonderful mother. All three kids had the same father, but he had abandoned them and had no relationship with his kids what so ever. This was the Grenadian culture for men. It was extremely rare to ever see a father who lived with his kids, provided for them, supported them, or even acknowledged them. Vah had never had the support of a church to get her through the difficult times. She did not have any governmental programs, food stamps, or medical coverage. She was completely on her own. Because of her level of poverty, her children went to the worst school on the island. And here I was, like many of the other medical students, married to a man who was 100% committed to his children & wife. My husband was 100% committed to providing for our family and most important committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Vah was right. I had absolutely no idea how blessed and lucky and extremely grateful I should forever be to have a man like this in my life. She would have given anything in the world to have a father for her children who loved them just a tiny portion of what I had. I wish there was a way to give her that. It was a powerful lesson to me to realize this rare and precious blessing of having a husband who put his family as his greatest priority in life.

David and I dated for 8 months before leaving on his mission. When he came home we were married less than 5 months after his return. We were only living in the same city for 3 of those months. Do you think I really knew what I was doing? No. I was only 20 years old. However, we did do something right. We prayed hard about that decision and our answer was as clear as day. I made the biggest decision of my life at 20 years old and with each year I realize more and more what a remarkable man I am married to. There are many days when the thought of bringing a 4th child into this world terrifies me. I look in the mirror and think, “Can I really handle this? Can I do it?” Then, this peaceful feeling comes over me and I remember, “Oh yea, I am not in this alone. My husband is here. Thank goodness!” I could not raise my children on my own. I see every year, especially with my 7 year old son, how much my kids need and love their dad. Having a father in the home is something that can not be replaced by anything else. It does not matter how much material things money can buy. Children need a mother and a father. I believe this very strongly.

I know this is not possible for every mother. I think about the role of a single parent just about every day and all I can hope for is that Heavenly Father will give them the extra strength they need to make it through. There was a time while living in Grenada when I wasn’t sure this life David and I were building together was what I really wanted. Coming into the motherhood role for me was not easy. Going through medical school in a third world country was hard. It seemed like my husband was never around, and when he was, he was continually stressed in a way I had never seen him before. One night I went out on a walk by myself and had a little pity party in my head. “Oh, this is so hard. Do I really even want this? Poor me. Isn’t there another road that is easier?” I remember walking into our little apartment that night. All the lights were on, the music was turned up, it was as hot and humid as you can imagine with no air conditioning. And there was my husband with my two year old son dancing and laughing and playing. Dave was throwing Josh up into the air as high as he could and catching him. Josh kept saying “Again, again! More highs, more highs!” I watched this and the spirit spoke directly to my heart at that moment. The words that hit me were, “Kristine, there is no man in the world that will, or could, possibly love your son as much as your husband. And, if you personally ever do anything to lose what you have, you are a complete fool and you will regret it forever.” These words hit hard. (“Fool” was not the word that came to my mind, but instead a word we do not use in our house anymore that begins with an I.) I don’t know if there is a word strong enough or low enough to describe myself if I did choose to walk away from the greatest blessing Heavenly Father has given me. This treasure, of course, is my family.
When I married David I had no idea what an exceptional father he would one day become. I especially know this to be true now that we are raising a son with Down syndrome. My husband has a certain patience and tenderness and child like qualities that are rare to find in fathers. Above all, my husband has a testimony of his divine role as a father. I know he takes this responsibility as a sacred calling. I am so grateful for this.
We all love you Dave!

Maddie turned 5!

This year, all Maddie wanted for her birthday was a "swimming birthday party." Maddie LOVES to swim! I wasn't able to take any pictures of the swimming part. (my hands were more than full with Tyler and 12 other little swimmers.)

This is the swimming pool cake Dave made. The diving board was being a little difficult. It was made out of wood and was not strong enough to hold the mermaid barbie. We had the birthday party at the Jordan YMCA in the outdoor pool. It ended up being a great party and Maddie had so much fun being the birthday girl. No more birthday parties until the new baby comes! Yeah!

My brother turned 30!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRO! I really do have the best brother in the world. (I am not being sarcastic, or joking around. I am dead serious.) Dave would agree with me 100%. We are sad we don't get to spend more time with him mostly because there is never a boring second when we are with Dan. He can make every situation fun and adventurous. He can also always find something funny to laugh at. It is hard to believe he is 30!Cortney found this cute picture of my dad holding Dan when he was 1 years old. My dad was right around 30 in this picture. Everyone who knew my dad says that Dan reminds them so much of Richard.
Thanks Dan, for not only being the best brother, but also being the best uncle in the world!!!
We love you! By the way, my brother and his wife have become world travelers. I can not even count how many countries they have been to in the short years they have been married. Last week Dan got back from Thailand and China. Check it out. The first pic is on the great wall of China and the second is taken after an elephant jungle tour.

Maddie's 1st dance recital!

Maddie was in the "Red Tomato" dance! They started off the dance by coming out of the tomato can doing a somersault and at the end of the dance they threw tomatoes at the audience. (not real of course) It was super cute. Maddie is actually the youngest in this class, so this dance was quite a stretch for her. She has never memorized a routine dance before. This is a new dance place we started in January in Zionsville named, "Village Dance Studio." I love the teachers and methods they use to teach dance to young kids. We will definitely be headed back there in the fall. I will admit I totally got tears in my eyes as I saw her come out on that big stage. It is amazing how brave little kids can be in front of so many people.

Maddie has loved every minute of her dance classes.
P.S. Did I mention that the recital was 3 HOURS long?! Dave was going to die by the end. They had a lot of graduating seniors that were featured. It took forever.

Maddie's last day of school

Maddie loved her preschool at Bethel. These are her two teachers this year; Mrs. Delverney and Mrs. Forthsyte. I don't think Maddie ever complained once about going to school over the last two years. When we drive past her school, she goes on and on about how much she misses it. She asked if she could do the summer school program there. Sorry Matts, it is time to move on. I am happy we did Bethel. It was very close and convienent and we made some great friends there. Maddie having fun with Lilly, Ella and Miriam.

Bethel had a super fun playground!

Lilly is Ella's little sister. Isn't she adorable? We love the Chimbanda family!

Say good bye to preschool!

The best show and tell!

What could be a better show and tell than bringing your dog to school? This was a special day they celebrated Maddie's birthday and she got to choose what she wanted to show off to the class. The girl standing next to Maddie is named Ella. Maddie and Ella have been best buds in school for the last two years. We usually ended up having two play dates a week with Ella because these two had so much fun together. Ella is going to a different Kindergarten and we will miss her very much! Tucker actually behaved himself quite nicely. All the kids took turns walking him, brushing him, and giving him treats.

This is only about half of her class, but see the kid with the hair in his eyes? He has the coolest name ever....Crew! In case you don't know, that is the name Dave and I picked for our first dog together. (Although we spelled it "Cru".) I was so excited to meet another Crew! That name means a lot to Dave, if you don't know why, just go check out the movie, "Rad."

I had the most wonderful Mother's Day this year in Akron, Ohio! We spent our last weekend with Jessie and James. Joe and Ash came as well as Geoff and Lynnette. We even had James' mother and sister join us.

All the mothers received a rose at church. It was a big weekend because Will was baptized. It was great having all the cousins there. Jessie had so much action packed into 2 short days. Baptism, lunch at Panera, shopping at Macys and TJ Max, boy birthday party doing lazor tag, BBQ in the backyard, girl's princess birthday party the next day, swimming at the Hilton with pizza party, girl chick flick, boys got a basketball game together....seriously, how much more can you pack into 2 days? WE LOVED IT!

Jessie is moving to Denver this weekend! No more quick weekend get togethers. We will be excited to meet up with you in Denver though.

Done with 1st grade!

Yesterday was Josh's last day of first grade. It has been a fabulous year! I have grown very attached to his teacher and classmates. I am very proud of Josh for all that he has accomplished this year. Tonight we had a cook out with all his class, most parents, and his teacher at Eagle Creek Park. I have realized that I am much better at planning fun activities for Maddie and her girlfriends, and I decided I needed to step it up and have a big party just for Josh. The kids had a great time and we feel blessed to know such wonderful Christian families from Josh's school. Tonight we started by all going on a little hike to a tree house that overlooks the lake. Maddie and I buried some treasures yesterday under the tree house that the boys had to dig up. Then, we went to our camp site where Dave started a big fire. We had hot dogs, smores, and tons of yummy sides. The boys had a blast playing football and baseball while Maddie jumped right in with the older girls running around being hyper. Even Tyler was in one of his "Go, go, go Tyler modes." Basically he runs from place to place, laughing the whole time, trying to keep up with all the action. It was a beautiful night in Eagle Creek Park.
Two of the boys came over for a sleep over and after a long game of basket ball, they are now watching a movie in the living room. Josh's school has been one of our very favorite things about living here. We can't wait for Maddie to join him next year. One of the things I have loved this year has been volunteering every other Friday for Mrs. Huskin's from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Finding some place for Maddie and Tyler to go has not always been easy, but being more involved in Josh's class this year has been awesome. I love getting to know the kids, watching the remarkable way in which Mrs. Huskin's handles them, and watching them all excited to learn about so many new things. I am just grateful Josh has had such a wonderful year.
It is so important to Dave and I that our children thrive in school. We want them to have caring teachers, good influences, and a love for learning. Josh has worked really hard this year and has grown so much. I thought it would be fun to write out the list of his very last spelling words. Being the horrible speller that I am, I have been amazed by the words Josh has learned this year. We typically spend 15 minutes on them every day. He is given 10 regular words, 5 bonus words, an 5 challenge words each week.

Grandma Ann is turning 85!

This Sunday I am missing my grandma's 85th birthday party. (sniff, sniff) Oh, how I would love to be with all my cousins and aunts and uncles in my grandma's big, beautiful backyard. My awesome cousin Elizabeth has put together a book for grandma. Below are the words I wrote. I have always loved my grandma. We became close during the years I was attending the University of Utah. Her house was one of my favorite places to practice singing and piano. I lived within walking distance to her house in the Avenues. Then, for 4 months Dave, Josh, Maddie and I lived with her while we were transitioning between Grenada and Michigan. She is a remarkable person and a loving grandmother. Happy Birthday Grandma!

Dear Grandma Ann,
It is quite a daunting task to write a tribute to you grandma. Where do I start? How do I compile all the thoughts and memories in my head? There are so many things I would love to touch on. For example, your love and appreciation for classical music, your cooking would be too obvious, your beautiful gardens in front and back, your example of hard work and never ending service, the individual love you show to each of your children, grand children, and great grandchildren, and this is just the very beginning. Well grandma, I am not going to talk about any of those things.
There is one thing that I love about you more than anything else. I truly cherish you for this, especially now that I am in the midst of raising my own family. Grandma, you have given me something greater than anything money can buy; something that the majority of children in the world dream of having more than anything else. Grandma, you gave me the greatest father I could ever ask for.
There are even some things you may not know about your oldest son. Everyone talks about the wild, adventurous, and fun person my dad was, but I think he would want to be remembered for the spiritual impressions he left as well.
Do you know that through my elementary school years (the years when my mom was really sick), I remember him being awake and chipper to start each new day. He would have a healthy breakfast waiting for us three kids as he packed our lunches and helped us remember all our books and homework. Now that I have three kids to have ready for school by 8:15, I know how stressful this can be at times. But the most amazing part is that through all of the chaos, he had the goal for us to read the Book of Mormon every morning as we all sat together in the kitchen. He was reading scriptures as he flipped pancakes. As strange as I thought this was, I really enjoyed it.
Then, at night, my dad never seemed too busy or too tired to read to us. Our favorite stories that he invented were called “Bowser and Tinker stories,” about a dog and a cat. But before he would tell us a story, we read the stories of the Old and New Testament. I love those stories and I love that he made that constant effort to show us what was most important at the beginning and close of the day.
My dad always wanted to be “in” on what was going on in my life. From early on, through my teenage years, he would come into my room and say, “What is on your mind Kristine?” I knew I couldn’t brush him aside, because he wasn’t going to leave until I let him know everything that was happening with my friends and school. I felt comfortable to talk to him about anything and found myself asking all kinds of questions. These late night conversations became much more than just casual talks. Over and over my dad would stress the important things in life and bear testimony of his core beliefs. I think back to those conversations and know they had a powerful effect.
My dad taught me through his example what was important to him. Being on time to church, even when it was just him, he somehow managed to keep the three of us quiet on the bench. He made us participate every time the home teachers came over. We have many wonderful memories of laughing together and spending special time as a family on Monday nights. He spoke about his mission often and also expressed his love for the temple. I know that my dad loved and had a true testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I mention this to you because I owe so much of the credit to you and Dick for your faith, hard work, and belief in raising a family unto God.
If you are ever having a bad day, just think of the son you raised! (Not to mention your 8 other children!) I believe your son did all that he could to be the greatest father for the short years he had with us. When my dad talked about you and grandpa, he did so with deep respect and admiration. He was great because you and grandpa are great. I think about our ancestors and their “greatness” more than you possibly know. Thank you for raising my father to be the man that he was. The rest of my life will continue to be shaped by those 18 years with him.
And now, being pregnant with my 4th child, I have to defend myself in a world that looks upon a big family as a crazy and irresponsible choice to make. I have people asking me why I would possibly want this many kids and I proudly tell them all about you. I tell them that I look up to my grandma who raised a family twice as big as mine, more than perhaps anyone else. Grandma, you are an amazing blessing in my life. You are a blessing in my mother’s life. You are a blessing to David’s life, my children’s life, and a source of strength to your entire posterity.
We all love you so much. Love, Kristine Nebeker Orme

Chicago Rocks!

Last months, these lovely ladies came for a visit! You may not recognize them in their cool shades. Here we have my sister-in-law Cortney, my sis Kate, and my mom. We took a girls trip to Chicago for 3 days with the 4 of us plus our favorite girl Maddie. The whole weekend was FABULOUS! Thanks so much mom for making it all happen. We took the Red Line to get to Lincoln Park. The subway is always a fun adventure on vacations.
Maddie never complained or whined once on the whole trip. She was such a trooper going shopping for hours and walking all over the city.

Maddie sure loves Cort. She also couldn't get enough of the Rapunzel barbie that my mom bought her in the Disney Store.

Maddie and I stood in front of this dude for at least 20 minutes.

Big cities are so much fun!

Strike a pose cute girl!

We went on an awesome architecture boat tour of the city.

Dora came on that tour too.

Here is the 5 of us! I just wish the time didn't go so fast.

This was the first time Cortney had been to our house. We are glad that Dan let her come with us. This was the morning we watched Tyler get on the big bus to go to school. We also had a great game of basket ball with Josh in front of our house.

There were so many highlights of the trip: Blue Man Group, Michigan Ave shopping, Eating out, getting lost, watching all the street musicians and dancers, Giradelli banana splits, & amazingly perfect weather. My favorite time was spent together in our hotel room eating all the yummy things we found at Trader Joe's on the bed while watching clips of cheesy movies after a LONG day of shopping. I just loved being with you guys and can't wait until we do it again. Thanks again mom for being so much fun and always the best sport on trips!!!

Happy Easter!

It was a wonderful Easter weekend! Easter egg hunt & candy....
We are not too old for the Easter Bunny yet.

Matching outfits for the boys and a special Easter dress that Dave picked out for his princess.

Holidays are so much fun with little kids!

Spring is here!

This picture is Tyler giving me a mischievous grin right before he bolts off the path down the grassy hill. He is saying, "I bet you can't catch me!"

SURPRISE! I had my oldest friend come visit me over the weekend.

I LOVE YOU GRACE!

This tree has been so great for our kids to climb. (All the neighbors too.)

It didn't take Tyler long to warm up to Grace.

Two little flower heads in the garden.

Grace has absolutely no idea how much it meant to me to have her come visit!!!

You know I have always loved you like a sister, and now my sister Kate is actually becoming room mates with Grace in Salt Lake! Just remember who was friends with you first ok?!

Love ya!!!

I do want to give a quick recap of a few of the things we did.

* Roller blading the downtown canal. It is pretty fun to hear what people say about you when you cruise by. "Wow, mommy, they are wearing roller skates!! Cool!" It is as if most people have never seen them before.

*Shopping downtown and dinner at "Rock Bottom."

*Staying up late watching "High School Musical" as we fill and hide all the Easter eggs. Bring on the old high school memories!

*Easter Sunday crepe breakfast. Church. Grace was my special helper for the Primary and Nursery Music. Dave planned the whole Easter dinner. Family bike ride/walk around our neighborhood.

*On Monday, Grace got to see what a normal "school day" is for me. Getting all the kids off to school, errands, shopping, & a quick work out at the Y. My favorite part of the day is when I finally crashed on the couch and an hour later when I woke up, Grace was upstairs playing with Tyler and letting Maddie brush her hair. Grace did the cutest french braids in Maddie's hair. Maddie thought she had just made a new best friend.

*We all ate dinner with Dave at Panera and Grace and I went to a movie. We saw "Water for Elephants". I won't explain the drama that happened while we were watching the movie, but I am pretty sure Grace won't forget it.

* The best part about having Grace come was the talking and talking and talking. We have so much to catch up on and I wish there was a way to stop the clock and soak up these wonderful moments to the fullest. I loved seeing so many pictures of what she has been up to. I am in awe of everything she has done and seen and the people she has met along the way. Grace, I owe you big time for taking the time and money to come visit us here in Indiana! You're the best! By the way, Dave and my kids love you too!!!
